A lot of people have come to one of my other articles looking for a way to completely uninstall Minecraft from their computer. I will show you how to do that in this article, plus show you a helpful shortcut for Windows.
Uninstall Minecraft In Windows
Minecraft is simply a set of files in your user folder.
Open My Computer
and type %appdata%
to get there.
Simply delete the folder called .minecraft
to remove Minecraft from your computer. If you are planning to reinstall the game afterward, you may want to copy your save game folder before deleting. I have verified that the newly released Minecraft 1.8 is still installed to this same directory in Windows.
You probably have a shortcut on your desktop that you can delete as well.
Uninstall Minecraft In OS X
For Mac users, you can find your Minecraft install under ~/Library/Application Support
. Per Mac user Jon’s comments below, the minecraft folder is a hidden folder.
Open finder and press Shift-Command-G. Then type in
“~/Library/Application Support/minecraft”
Simply delete your Minecraft folder here to remove the game.
Aside from the game, there will also be cached files from http://minecraft.net under Applications > Utilities > Java Preferences
in the Network tab
. Delete these also to complete your uninstall.
Additional Information
Minecraft is a self contained program that runs using Java. Unlike pretty much every other game, Minecraft does not enter data into the registry of your operating system.
You do not have to worry about leftover settings somewhere after deleting the game’s folder.
Also, if you get an error when trying to delete your game folder, that means that something in the folder is still in use. The most obvious reason would be that the game is still running. If it continues to give you errors, restart your computer and then try to delete the folder.
If this information helped you out, leave a comment! Thanks!

my .minecraft folder will not delete. It says: Cannot Delete Bin: It is being used by another person or program.
BUT I DONT HAVE ANY OTHER PROGRAMS OPEN!!!

Your java process is probably still running. You can open your task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and stop any Processes that say java on them.
If you still cant delete the folder, reboot should always fix that

Did you try typing the location directly?
%appdata%\.minecraft\bin\
Try an unlocker
thx but i needed help pc guy told me to remove the game then restart then download because the game lunchwe rwont work any thing u can add?
i need some help finding the folder because i’m trying to install a mod to the game
i think i screwed it up because i moved it (the entire minecraft folder) into a different folder (my folder). the reason why is because i was trying to pull out sreenshots more easily, and now they aren’t even being saved in the folder, the one i moved, when i take more screenshots
also, my minecraft file size keeps increasing (it started at about 4.6Mb and is almost 13Mb), but i have no clue where the file is (it isnt being saved into the minecraft folder i moved, but somewhere else)
i know it is somewhere because i can still load and play the game with my world (the larger file world)
also, i have already tried searching for the file using your method, and others, and i have a Windows XP computer
Chris what version of the game are you running? I’ve tested up to 1.7.3 and every version on windows so far has put it in the same place.
The full path of the game, assuming you use C as your hard drive is “C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft”.
What happens if you try to type in that path in a Windows folder window?
i have minecraft 1.7.3
it was in C:\….\%appdata%\….\.minecraft when i found it the 1st time
when i typed that path the 1st time i found it, but the searches keep coming up empty now when i type in that address and even when i just search for “minecraft” or “%appdata%” or just “appdata”
i tried to unistall the game (by going to “Backup Manager” on the 1st window of minecraft launcher) and the reinstalled it 2 times already but somehow my profile and username still has everything (i have acheivements and stats of deaths and everything) and the only thing changed was that i had no worlds
i really have NO CLUE where the memory is being loaded from
i have deleted the game 4 times and redownloaded it but it still has the crashes that i was treyig to get rid of. i have minecraft 1.7.3
Damien do you know why it started crashing in the first place? Do you have PC or Mac?
wat hakpees if u have Lion???
not sure if anything changes, but I will see if I can get you some feedback on that. I will post a reply here if I find out anything for you. Thanks.
Hey, I cant find the http://minecraft thingie in my java preferences!:'(
huh?
Hi,
how can i find %appdata% without the address bar in My Computer?
Well you can type it in the “run” bar from the start button down at the bottom left or you can navigate there manually. It is located under your users folder under applicationdata/roaming. The folder is hidden by default so you have to tell windows to show hidden folders. That’s why tutorials always use the shortcut
hi, i did what u said but now when i play the game i cant play long becose when i cross the 5 mb line in my map memory the game crashes!!? do u have a solution for this ??
Have not come across such an error. The new version you replaced it with or one of it’s add-ons has an issue.
Minecraft does not exist anywhere else on your computer, so it is not an issue with leftover data.
so how do u think i can solve this problem, i am thinking about downloading a paintely texture pack becose it all started when i removed one.
Well, the way I would handle it is to remove the current version, reinstall the game alone, then test that. Once you verify the plain game works with no mods, you can add one at a time until you find out what is causing your problems.
Perhaps one of your texture packs is causing a problem, especially if you have used MCPatcher to enable it.
hmm, thet can be a selution but i can just play the game normaly but the problem i think is thet my computer doesnt allow minecraft to grow in mb or something becose i got 5.4 mb space in a saved game for minecraft and if i cross the 5.4 mb the game gives a error thet sais i am out of memory but is there a way to completly delete al the minecraft things from my computer and get it back becose if i just delete the folder with everything in it i just get the same problem if i reinstal it -.-
thx for your time btw its grate u do things like this
larrw
My problem is that when I try to open Minecraft the screen is frozen showimg me the “Updates Done” dialouge with the green bar at the bottom being ALMOST FULL. I tried deleting and reinstalling and playing in browser but still shows the same thing and it wont change no matter what I do. This is probably due to me trying to install mods to minecraft but did something wrong in the progress. Id appreciate it if you could help me. Thank You
